The Cowbell National Cycling Tour goes from the strength to strength

The third edition of the annual Cowbell National Cycling Tour of Ghana has finally established the event as one of the biggest sporting events in the country and a permanent feature on Ghana’s sporting calendar.

From the exquisite launch ceremony to the well orchestrated media activity and the consummate logistical arrangements, everyone was left in no doubt that the Cowbell National Cycling Tour had hit the targeted international standard and was ready to challenge the very best cycling tours in Africa.

Following the launch of the event at the plush La Palm Royal Beach hotel, communication rolled out with a flurry of interviews and adverts on television and radio networks in addition to newspaper articles.

5 national television networks were partnered on the event to bring daily coverage to viewers. A total of 19 radio stations nationwide partnered on the Tour together with the two largest daily newspapers, five news websites and two billboard providers with a total of 30 billboards across the eight regions that the tour was passing through. The result was daily news reports during the evening news programmes as well as live coverage of race starts and finishes. At least 7 radio stations gave daily reports on happenings on the tour allowing the public to follow the results closely.

The actual event finally rolled out on Monday 27th June and right from the first 103km Accra – Mankessim stage - it was obvious that the fight for this year’s crown was going to be long, hard and fierce. Throughout the 11 stages and over the 1,313 kilometres, competition stayed keen with some of the youngest cyclists proving their ability to compete with the more experienced ones.

Samuel Anim (Green jersey winner for the previous year’s edition) emerged tops in the first stage and successfully defended the green and red jerseys throughout the entire 11-stage competition. The yellow jersey changed hands a few times along the tour but it was eventually experienced Prosper Agbo of the City Migro club who managed to gain a commanding lead going into the final two stages of the race. Prosper powered across the finish line in Accra as the new champion of the Cowbell National Cycling Tour.

One of the major additions to the 2013 edition of the Cycling Tour was the publicity caravan, which went ahead of the cyclists and drew crowds to the roadside through the use of a public address system and giving out of souvenirs.

At the Trade Fair centre, crowds gathered to watch the presentation of jerseys and medals and see the traditional spectacular fireworks display as Prosper Agbo celebrated his impressive feat.

Increased resources on the Cowbell National Cycling Tour of Ghana has clearly resulted in increased exposure for the Cowbell brand and put the competition in the best possible position to go international in 2014.
